Some students opt to defer college for a gap year experience during which these students will work, travel abroad, or perform service. Gap year participants speak enthusiastically about their growth during these experiences and often begin college with renewed vigor and motivation. Students receive many benefits from taking a gap year:

  • The maturity that comes from a year of living independently and taking responsibility for their choices
  • Renewed enthusiasm for academic challenges
  • Greater exposure to other cultures, people, and languages
  • A deeper understanding of themselves and the world

Some students begin planning a gap year early in their education while others decide to consider a gap year midway through senior year. The information here is designed to help you research different options whenever you decide a gap year might be the right next step.
